City in the Desert: Doha Travel Blog
A close friend and I had been planning a trip together for a long time. We wanted to get permission from our families to travel to a different country on our own at a young age. Since his family lived in Qatar, we decided to go to Doha, and this was my first solo trip abroad.
When I tell most of my friends about Qatar, they confuse it with Dubai. However, these two cities are actually very different and have completely different characteristics. Doha's lack of a tourism sector as developed as Dubai's keeps its people more connected to their culture. Although it is a developed city, it is located in the middle of the desert, so the desert holds an important place in the culture of the Qatari people, and everyone loves to go there and go on safaris in off-road vehicles, which explains why city traffic mostly consists of off-road vehicles.

I understood why people love deserts so much when I went there. Although it was naturally very hot during the day, I had the opportunity to watch the sunset accompanied by cool evening air. The country, which consists of part of the Rub' al-Khali Desert, has one of only five natural formations in the world where the desert meets the sea directly. I actually found the beauty of the city located in the desert quite appealing. The modern buildings and clean city impressed me, considering they were built in the middle of a desert.
Despite being located in the desert, there were green spaces within the city, modern areas, and coastal roads, and of course, the air was dusty due to its location. Thanks to my friend's family, we visited each of these places and I saw many truths about the country. I was also surprised that many of the houses in the city were empty because it seemed strange to me that so many modern buildings were vacant. I later learned that this was the government's way of trying to attract tourists and population to the city.
This trip was another travel experience where I realized that cities aren't actually what we think they are when we get there. Of course, going with my friend made the trip much more enjoyable than it would have been otherwise, and I really liked this city.
